ME cos. request $130M in broadband funding

Sixteen projects to expand Maine's network of broadband services have been received by the federal agencies charged with accepting and coordinating the applications.

The Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service and the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications Information Administration, jointly released executive summaries of the more than 2,000 applications vying for a piece of the $7.2 billion stimulus funding to expand broadband access in unserved and underserved parts of the country.

The Maine projects range in scale from a $35,000 request from Ellsworth-based Faith in Action Community Connection to create a computer center for seniors and families, to a $50 million request from NATVentures LLC in Bangor to create a public computer center for Maine Native Americans.

The projects will be reviewed by Maine's Broadband Strategy Council and other state agencies, who will recommend to the federal government which proposals should receive funding. About $130 million is sought by Maine-based companies and organizations, with another $15 million in Maine projects submitted by North Carolina-based FairPoint Communications.
