The founder and executive director of a science and technology charter school in Portland was fired Thursday, before the school's first semester this fall, in what board members called "a pattern of mismanagement."
Maine Today Media reported that John Jaques said he was fired from his post as head of the Baxter Academy for Technology and Science at the request of Dan Amory, an attorney at Drummond Woodsum, who said he would not donate any more money to the school as long as Jaques remained its director.
At issue was a $500,000 line of credit that board members said Jaques mismanaged; Jaques denied any mismanagement and said that line of credit had been secured, according to the paper.
Jaques said his firing throws into question the school's opening this fall, which still hinges on further approval from the state commission overseeing charter school applications.
Jana Lapoint, chairwoman of the Maine Charter School Commission, said commissioners were aware that Jaques would not be leading the school when they gave the school its final approval this week.
