Portland-N.S. freight ferry proposed

Nova Scotia officials are considering a year-round ferry service to New England that would accommodate tourists and freight.

Members of the Port of Yarmouth and the Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission are exploring a partnership with a New England city - perhaps Portland, Portsmouth, N.H., or Boston -- to create a service that would transport tourists in the summer between ports, and freight trucks year round. Proponents say truckers would save time and fuel by providing an alternative to the 300-mile trip by road, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The summer ferry service would replace the high-speed Cat, which is subsidized by Nova Scotia. Last year the province provided the Cat operator with $5 million and has agreed to cover $12 million in operating losses for the upcoming season, reported the paper. Congress is considering removal of some of the red tape that hampers short sea shipping, enhancing the appeal of the international ferry service.
