Post-election leadership jockeying begins

More political shakeups are in store at the State House following Tuesday's elections as the new Democratic majority will nominate its picks for three top state offices and its lineup of legislative leaders next month.

The current state treasurer, attorney general and secretary of state — all selected by the previously Republican-majority Legislature — will likely be replaced by Democrats who will put up their own nominees for the posts on Dec. 5, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Holding those state offices now are: Bruce Poliquin, treasurer; William Schneider, attorney general; and Charlie Summers, secretary of state.

Republican party leadership is also expecting a change, the Bangor Daily News reported, as party chairman Charlie Webster has confirmed that he will not seek reelection for party leadership.

The newspaper reported that Webster expects Gov. Paul LePage to nominate someone to serve as party chairman for the next two years.

Within the Legislature, Democrats in the Senate and House are expected to caucus next week to select their new party leaders, according to Seacoast Online.

The BDN reported Friday on a rundown of the likely candidates for the next crop of legislative leaders.
