Program tackles IT work force shortage

Project Login, a program spearheaded by the University of Maine System and Educate Maine, is looking to double the number of computer science and information technology graduates from the university system by 2016.

That would increase the number of IT graduates to 160 in three years,  the Morning Sentinel reported. The newspaper reported a shortage of 977 computer and information technology professionals that Maine is expected to face by 2018, citing a report released last year by Southern Maine Community College.

Project Login, which is being supported by Idexx Laboratories, WEX Inc., Maine Medical Center, Unum and TD Bank and other Maine businesses, will focus its efforts on increasing enrollment, improving retention of students and providing internships that will give students real-world experience in the IT field before they graduate.

Educate Maine is a business-led nonprofit organization created by the merger of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education and the Maine Compact for Higher Education. It promotes college and career readiness and increased education attainment.
