PUC approves upgrades for wind farm
State regulators yesterday approved a $13.5 million transmission line upgrade to connect a wind farm in Roxbury to the grid.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission granted conditional approval to Central Maine Power Co. to replace an existing 34.5-kilovolt line from Rumford to Roxbury with a larger, 115-kV line to support Record Hill Wind LLC's 22-turbine wind farm in western Maine, according to a press release from the PUC. The project will be primarily funded by Record Hill, which is a joint venture between former Gov. Angus King and former Maine Public Broadcasting Corp. Director Robert Gardiner's company, Independence Wind, and Lyme, N.H.-based Wagner Forest Management. Conditions of the approval include financial assurances from Record Hill and a three-month prepayment to CMP for construction costs. The plan also includes building a new substation in Roxbury.
The wind farm received a state permit last summer and site work has already begun, but Record Hill delayed completion until 2011 because of low energy prices.
