Retail sales dip in November

Retail sales in November dipped more than 2% compared with November 2008, but food and auto sales came in higher than last year.

Total taxable retail sales in November were down 2.3% over the same month in 2008, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Year-to-date sales were 7.8% lower than 2008. Building supply sales fell the most in November, down 6.5% from November 2008, while lodging dipped 5.4% over the same month the year before.

Though auto and transportation sales were 6.6% higher in November 2009 compared with November 2008, year-to-date sales remain 7.8% below 2008. Food store sales rose 2.5% in November, and are the only category in which year-to-date sales are positive, at 2.8%.
