Retail sales fall in 2009

Retail sales revenues in 2009 fell nearly 7% from 2008, with the largest drops in business operating and building supply sales.

Total taxable retail sales in 2009 were a little under $16 billion, a 6.8% drop from $17.1 billion in 2008, according to data from the Maine State Planning Office. Business operating sales dropped 16.8% from last year, while building supply sales fell 16.3%. Only food stores sales rose in 2009 to a 2.2% increase over 2008.

Total taxable sales for the month of December were down 2.2% from December 2008. While restaurant sales for that month rose 2.5%, lodging sales dropped 11.6%, according to the SPO.
