Retail sales stronger in 2010

Retail sales ended the year nearly 3% over 2009, with lodging sales seeing the largest year-over-year gain.

Total taxable retail sales in 2010 were $16.6 billion, a 2.8% rise over 2009, according to the Maine State Planning Office. All categories saw improvements over the previous year, with lodging sales and other retail sales rising the most, 7.8% and 4%, respectively. The lowest increases were in building supply sales and general merchandise, which saw increases of 0.7% and 2.4%, respectively.

For the month of December, retail sales increased 2% over December 2009, with the largest gain of 5% coming from building supply sales.
