Top labor pick bows out

Cheryl Russell, Gov. Paul LePage's pick to head the Department of Labor, has withdrawn her name from the running in order to focus on her own venture.

LePage announced yesterday that Russell had removed herself from consideration, and she told the Portland Press Herald she wanted to focus on a venture that helps professional women advance their careers. Through her business, Competitive Edge Consulting LLC, Russell last year launched Go Figure!, through which Russell provides life coaching and image consulting to women, particularly those who struggle with body image. Russell said response to the business has been "phenomenal."

The search for a labor commissioner will be reopened.
