Rumford selectman voted 3-2 last night to support a casino in Oxford County.
Seth Carey, who has worked for two years to bring a casino to the area, said he is considering several locations in Rumford for the facility should it be allowed by voters, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. A selectman supporting the proposal told the board its support was critical for the project to be approved by voters statewide in November. (Read about Seth Carey and his casino proposal in the July 2006 Mainebiz story "Long odds".)
A selectman in opposition said he was bothered by what he had heard about the plan, though he didn't specify as to what he was referring. Pat LaMarche resigned as the casino's spokesperson this week saying she would not lie for the project, according to the paper. Rumford selectmen plan to meet with Carey in a workshop session or closed-door meeting in the next few weeks to discuss details of the proposal, the paper reported.
The three clowns who supported this concept have been in the pocket of Tom Carey for several years now. Under their leadership and moves, Rumford has gained lotsof negative press and exposure. Their support on this effort clearly shows that to one who has witnessed their actions over the recent past. Mr. Carey's attempt to gain permission to place a gambling casino in Rumford will not be, in my opinion done by him or his one man company. Evergreen. What very well may happen and I think is the hopeful outcome of this group is to accomplish the following. Evergree led by Seth and a few more hopefuls, will do the footwork. The footwork is to promote, hopefully get the permissions and support of general population and secure a location. Along the way they will sell the idea that we, the people of this area, will be lavished with financial and economical benefits. The truth is that if they are successful in their attempt to get the ball rolling, they will sell their efforts for a lucrative profit to a company from away who has the ability to bring their marvelous dream to a reality. Then they no longer have a say in how things work or ultimately where profits go. This is all under the guise of economical development. It would not surprise me if many who stand behind them or support their efforts would stand to receive a piece of that sale profit.
