Rumford wind farm in question

First Wind may be forced to abandon its plans for a wind farm near Rumford because the winds there would overpower the turbines.

At a board of selectmen meeting last night in Rumford, Matthew Kearns, vice president of development for the Massachusetts-based company, said studies have shown the winds on Black Mountain are too strong for current wind turbine technology to withstand, according to the Sun Journal. "The wind is very, very turbulent, so we don't even know yet whether to proceed with the project at all," he said. First Wind has proposed a 16-turbine, 40-megawatt wind farm on Black Mountain, but won't be able to commit to the project unless it finds a manufacturer that can make turbines to withstand the gale winds.

If the company is able to move forward, it would apply for a development permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection at the end of 2010, according to the paper.
