S. Portland builds war chest to fight oil lawsuit

The South Portland City Council has voted to appropriate $450,000 for the purpose of fighting a lawsuit filed by Portland Pipe Line Corp. that seeks to overturn a ban on loading crude oil at the city’s waterfront.

The Forecaster reported that the city has already spent $130,000 in legal fees associated with the “Clear Skies” ordinance, which was passed last year and bans the loading of crude oil onto marine vessels. The city has received about $5,300 in donations for its legal fund.

Portland Pipe Line filed its lawsuit in February, arguing that the “Clear Skies” ordinance interferes with interstate trade, diminishes the value of its pipeline, discriminates against Canadian interests and infringes on federal regulatory processes. About two months later, the city filed a response, saying the lawsuit should be dropped.
