Saco plant gets $28M military deal

A $28 million federal machine gun contract will support work at the General Dynamics-owned Saco Operations, according to a Tuesday announcement by U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

The $28,273,560 contract is for 12,000 M2A1 machine guns, a model that can be mounted on Humvees, and 6,000 barrels. The barrels use a new technology that allows gunners to change them more quickly, according to the press release.

The contract includes options that could double the barrel order.

The news comes on the heels of a late September announcement that Saco Operations would lay off 30 employees through January. A General Dynamics spokesman told the Portland Press Herald that the new contract would not change those plans, which came in response to a decline in demand for gun production.
