Distribution of out-of-state publications like the Wall Street Journal to stores in central, northern and eastern Maine has ended, as Bangor-based distributor Magazines Inc. negotiates a sale to a Massachusetts company.
The Foss family, which owned the bookstore chain Mr. Paperback as well as Magazines Inc., announced last month it would close the bookstores and sell Magazines Inc. to Worcester, Mass.-based Hudson LLC. The sale is still being negotiated, but Hudson plans to move distribution from Bangor to Gorham and will no longer continue the newspaper segment of Magazines Inc., according to The Ellsworth American. Magazines Inc. told customers last week that distribution of the WSJ, The New York Times and other national or regional publications to grocery and convenience stores north of Augusta would end March 25. Residents won’t be able to get a hard copy of those publications until a day or longer after their publication date. Magazines Inc. distributed the papers for 40 years.
Ralph Foss told The Ellsworth American that Hudson could change its mind and decide to distribute the publications, or that someone else could take over the service.
