Southwest planning to serve Portland jetport

Southwest Airlines' acquisition of AirTran Airways could bring more passengers and more competitive pricing to the Portland International Jetport, according to transportation officials.

Portland is one of 22 cities currently served by AirTran that Southwest plans to continue to serve following its absorption of the airline, according to The Associated Press. Southwest bought AirTran in May but continued to operate the two airlines separately through the end of 2011; now, it plans to merge the two airlines' services, a process expected to take several years. Southwest also plans to stop service at 15 AirTran cities.

A Southwest spokeswoman said changes to Portland's service won't be finalized for several months, so it's unclear whether the airline will add new routes to and from PWM. But jetport Director Paul Bradbury told the Portland Press Herald passengers who previously drove to airports in New Hampshire and Boston to use Southwest will likely use the Portland jetport instead. Airport management consultant Tod Yankee told the paper Southwest's low fares could make other airlines' fares more competitive.
