State to fund biomass projects

The Maine Forest Service has put out a request for proposals for biomass heat and energy projects to fund with more than $11 million in federal stimulus money.

The forest service, part of the Maine Department of Conservation, is looking to fund 15 shovel-ready biomass heat and energy projects with $11.4 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to a press release from the state. The projects must be public and will likely include schools, hospitals and government agencies at all levels. Gov. John Baldacci in August announced the funding, which is expected to create and retain 200 jobs in the forest products industry, including wood-fuel professionals, contractors and engineering positions, he said in the release.

The funding is available for two years, and the deadline for applications is Jan. 5.
