Ted Williams' letters going up for auction in Biddeford

Saco River Auction of Biddeford will auction 38 letters penned by Ted Williams, revealing another side to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame baseball player.

In an article on the Bangor Daily News website, the Associated Press reports that the letters were written to flight attendant Evelyn Turner, who was his mistress while he was married to his first wife, Doris Soule.

The letters were written from 1952 to 1954, when Williams served in the military, including time in Korea.

One letter was written a day after Williams crash-landed his burning F9F Panther after a mission. He considered himself lucky after escaping with just an ankle sprain.

“I had holes all over the plane and I was riding on all the prayers people say for me ‘cause I was awfully lucky,” Williams wrote. “My plane was burning like hell when I crash landed. Everybody around here now is calling me lucky. Anyway, I’m missing you.”

Another letter written after his father’s death describes Williams’ regret at not having spent more time with him.

The letters and other items from Turner’s estate are to be auctioned on Jan. 3 along with other baseball and celebrity memorabilia.
