Telehealth consortium hits halfway mark in connecting facilities
Bangor-based New England Telehealth Consortium said it has connected 200 of the 400 or so rural and urban health care facilities it aims to link electronically across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
The consortium is creating a broadband network that will connect hospitals, community health centers and other facilities in primarily rural locations so they can share medical information and consult over the Internet. FairPoint Communications is upgrading and building out its broadband system to provide the telemedicine services to the facilities.
Jim Rogers, founder of the consortium and president of the company managing the network's implementation, told The Associated Press the system improves health care capabilities in northern New England while cutting costs.
