University of Maine at Augusta President Rebecca Wyke has been reappointed to her post on a recommendation of University of Maine System Chancellor James H. Page, it was announced on Monday.
In June 2017, Wyke was appointed to a fixed three-year term to succeed James Conneely, who had announced his resignation earlier in the year.
Page has now asked the system’s Board of Trustees to retain Wyke as president, bypassing the presidential search requirement and — for the second time in Chancellor Page’s tenure — authorize a direct appointment for a campus president.
Page’s recommendation was informed by strong expressions of support for Wyke’s leadership from campus and community stakeholders, according to Monday’s announcement.
“The staff and faculty at the University of Maine at Augusta understand the success of public higher education must be measured by the success of Maine people,” Page said in the news release. “Under President Wyke’s leadership, UMA is opening up more opportunities for the students and communities we service.”
A leader in distance education, UMA has a statewide presence with two campuses in Augusta and Bangor, eight UMA Centers from Saco to Houlton, and 32 course receive sites across Maine. According to its website, it is the third-largest public university in Maine.
