A new program between the University of Maine and Thornton Academy is allowing students to get an engineering degree in just three years and save at least $24,000 in tuition.
"This is the only university in Maine where we have a pipeline where students can complete an entire year at high school,” Dana Humphrey, dean of the School of Engineering, told WCSH6.
A handful of high schools are currently part of the program. Humphrey said he hopes the program will create more partnerships with more schools across the state.
UMaine’s College of Engineering estimates there is a statewide shortage of more than 3,000 engineers. Nearly 27% of current engineers are reaching retirement age.
In April, the University of Southern Maine and Southern Maine Community College signed a series of agreements designed to boost the number of qualified engineers entering the Maine workforce, by allowing associate degree graduates of SMCC's engineering program to enter USM's programs for mechanical and electrical engineering programs, getting two full years of credit towards a USM baccalaureate degree.
