USM filled jobs despite hiring freeze

The University of Southern Maine filled more than 50 jobs during the 2007 fiscal year, despite a hiring freeze that was supposed to help eliminate a budget gap, according to the Portland Press Herald.

USM filled 54 full- and part-time jobs during a 10-month span in FY 2007, which ended June 30 this year, the paper said. Salaries and benefits for those jobs cost about $2.7 million, almost twice the $1.4 million USM saved by cutting 30 open positions during that period, the paper said.

University officials told the paper they should have been more aggressive in eliminating positions in FY 2007, which ended with a $3.5 million budget gap. Joseph Wood, USM interim president, told the paper he'll cut 30 vacant jobs in FY 2008, up from the 18 originally planned, and another 30 positions in FY 2009.
