High gas prices panic business owners

Record-breaking diesel prices that are breaking the budgets of Maine's logging truckers could threaten the state's entire forestry products industry, the Bangor Daily News reported.

To avert an industry-wide shutdown, Gov. John Baldacci is seeking ways to help truckers work through the winter, including suspending gas taxes and some hauling regulations, and buying fuel in bulk, according to the newspaper. Baldacci has also met with Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe to see whether he can declare a state of emergency.

Meanwhile, a new group called the Lower Fuel Prices in Maine Coalition met last Saturday in Lincoln to discuss ways to diminish the threat that high fuel prices pose to their livelihoods.
