West Elm Hotels announced today its plans for a 150-room boutique hotel in Portland’s East End, in what’s being called Portland Foreside — the former Portland Co. complex at 58 Fore St.
The announcement comes less than a week after the retailer West Elm opened a store in the Old Port neighborhood.
The hotel, which is expected to open in 2020, would be developed by Portland Foreside Development Co. LLC, an affiliate of CPB2 LLC, and operated by DDK, West Elm Hotel’s exclusive hotel development-and-management partner.
“Portland has experienced a renaissance within the past decade, creating a distinct and modern vibe, while honoring its maritime history,” said Peter Fowler, vice president of West Elm Hospitality. “Our collaboration with Portland Foreside Development Co. brings forth local knowledge and expertise that will deliver an original experience for guests, as well as the surrounding seaside community. Together, we will celebrate the city’s past and create opportunities for discerning guests to discover Portland.”
Portland Foreside is a major mixed-use development that is expected to include residential units, office space, hospitality offerings and food-and-beverage options. The hotel is being done by Portland Foreside Development Co.
"Portland Foreside Development Co. is excited about West Elm’s commitment to the City of Portland. We share the vision of connecting travelers to the daily life of Portland by focusing on a unique experience, highlighting the city’s local character and delivering one-of-a-kind amenities and services modern travelers crave most,” said Casey Prentice, manager of Portland Foreside Development Co.
The hotel complex will include 150 guest rooms, lobby bar and restaurant, outdoor pool and retail, among other amenities.
West Elm Hotels plans to open hotels in Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Oakland and Savannah, Ga., starting in early 2019.
West Elm, which is based in Brooklyn, N.Y., is part of Williams-Sonoma Inc. (NYSE:WSM). West Elm has 101 stores, including the recently opened Portland location.
