Yachting Solutions proposes Rockland harbor redevelopment

Rockport yacht restoration and service business Yachting Solutions has proposed a Rockland harbor redevelopment that includes a redesign of private harbor acreage, creation of a wave attenuator and creation of more public, private and small cruise ship piers and dockings.

The PenBay Pilot reported that mooring owners voiced concerns about the plan at a Rockland City Council meeting on Jan. 30. The plan was put forward by Stuart Smith, owner of the former MBNA property on Water Street, and Bill Morong Sr. and Bill Morong Jr. of Yachting Solutions, which leases space from Smith.

“The businessmen have the water rights in front of Boston Financial under submerged land lease,” City Manager Tom Luttrell told the Pilot. “They are coming to the city as a courtesy to let us know what they are proposing and what the city could do with the harbor in the future.”

The project could mean displacement of mooring owners.

“I think we should accommodate those people more than take something away from them,” said Steve Hale, owner of the lobster boat Captain Jack, who suggested that Yachting Solutions allow slip usage for the displaced.

Traffic from the municipal fish pier, lobster boats and sailors were also cited as difficulties with the plan.
