BIA gets $5M grant for renovation
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Bangor International Airport $4.9 million for the rehabilitation of its general aviation apron, which will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
The apron is used for parking airplanes and currently can accommodate planes weighing less than 100,000 pounds. The renovation will allow it to accommodate aircraft weighing up to 150,000 pounds. BIA typically has about 40 to 50 airplanes parked on the apron. Michaud, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said the improvements “could lead to new business and travel opportunities.”
The city’s finance committee in March approved the renovation work. The federal Airport Improvement Program grant will fund 90% of the project, while the city will contribute 7.5% and the Maine Department of Transportation 2.5%. The work will be done by Old Town-based Sargent Corp. and begin within several weeks, the Bangor Daily News reported. The work should be finished by October.
