BIW union members approve new contract

Bath Iron Work's largest union has ratified a new four-year contract that includes raises, a signing bonus and larger pension contributions. About 2,000 of 3,200 members of Local S6, a unit of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, turned out to vote Sunday, according to the Kennebec Journal. Eighty-two percent voted in favor of the contract.

The contract, on which BIW and Local S6 officials agreed Friday, includes a $3,000 bonus this year and annual raises beginning next year of between 2.25% and 2.75%. Pension contributions will increase from $2 per hour to $2.50 per hour over the four years.

BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said the new contract allows the shipyard to bid on a contract for the next nine DDG 51 destroyers. The shipyard has about 5,400 employees.
