Business group may back casino

Several well-known members of Maine's business community have banded together to explore legalizing a casino in Oxford County.

Stephen Barber, former president of Barber Foods in Portland, and Matt Hancock, a former principal of Hancock Lumber and Hancock Land and co-owner of the Mount Abram ski resort, have registered a political action committee with the state to support a casino, the Portland Press Herald reported. Other members of the PAC include Suzanne and Rupert Grover, founders of Grover Gun Drilling Inc. in Norway, and real estate developer Rob Lally, who also co-owns Mount Abram.

The PAC, called Black Bear Entertainment, will decide within 60 days whether to pursue citizen-initiated legislation to allow a casino, and so far has spent about $25,000 in talks with attorneys about the issue, which its members see as a potential economic boost to the region, the paper reported. If the PAC moves forward, it will need to collect more than 55,000 signatures by Feb. 1.

Voters rejected a proposal in November 2008 that would have legalized a casino in Oxford County.
