Committee opposes contractor licensing bill

A legislative committee Tuesday narrowly voted against a bill that would require licensing of building contractors.

The Business, Research and Economic Development Committee voted 7-6 against LD 272, with those opposed saying required licensing should wait until after a statewide building code is adopted in 2011, according to the Kennebec Journal. The vote puts Senate approval of the bill in question, since none of the three senators on the committee supported it. The House will still discuss the bill.

Bills seeking contractor licensing have been introduced more than 20 times with no success.
