Creative economy efforts attract fed's eye

Maine's burgeoning creative economy has captured the attention of a federal official looking to replicate the state's efforts in other areas.

Maine Arts Commission Director Donna McNeil and Rep. Chellie Pingree met yesterday in Washington, D.C., with National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman to talk about the state's creative economy initiatives, according to the Bangor Daily News. McNeil told the paper that Landesman requested the meeting in November because of the state's efforts in using arts and culture to spur economic and downtown development. Maine's programs could be a model for other states looking to build their creative economies with little investment, McNeil said.

Since 2004, the state has had a Creative Economy Council and has held three conferences on the creative economy. The Maine Arts Commission also recently announced a new program called Creative Communities = Economic Development that will provide two $50,000 grants to communities to expand their creative economy sector, according to the paper.
