The Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce is backing a proposal to bring a casino to Oxford.
The chamber's board voted unanimously to support the proposed four-season casino resort, put forth by Black Bear Entertainment LLC, according to the Sun Journal. Board chair Sue Goulet said the casino would create jobs and generate revenue for the area, as well as fill a niche for a large hotel and conference center in the Oxford Hills region. "In every angle that we looked at in regards to the resort casino project, we felt that having a resort here would make us more of a destination instead of a community that people passed through," she told the paper.
Black Bear Entertainment says if voters approve the casino at a state referendum, construction of the casino could begin in the summer of 2011, and that almost 1,000 new jobs would be created, as well as an additional 800 from construction and support services. The group in December submitted a petition to place the casino effort on the November 2010 ballot.
