Defense bill includes $4M for UMaine

The University of Maine could receive $4 million in federal money to continue developing protective gear for soldiers in combat.

The Defense Appropriations Bill for fiscal year 2008, which requests nearly $460 billion and was approved last Thursday in the U.S. House of Representatives, sets aside $4 million for a defense-related research project at UMaine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, according to a press release from the University of Maine. The center has been developing and manufacturing ballistic panels for military tents that help protect soldiers from explosions.

With the additional money, AEWCC could begin working toward commercializing the product, the release said. The bill still needs final approval from President George W. Bush.
