Fraser union workers reject contract

Workers at Fraser Paper Inc.'s mill in Madawaska have turned down an initial labor contract offer from the company.

Fraser and the 460 workers, members of the United Steelworkers union, have been in contract negotiations since August, according to the Bangor Daily News. On Nov. 22, 98% of workers voted down the initial contract, Duane Lugdon, international representative for the union, told the paper. Lugdon declined to give specifics on the contract, but said its terms "were not advantageous for employees." Negotiations are scheduled to continue today.

The Toronto-based company has been in bankruptcy protection since June and is in the process of stabilizing its finances and restructuring, according to the paper.
