Grant funds 'citizen science' in Acadia

A $250,000 National Science Foundation grant will support a new "citizen science" pilot project at Acadia National Park, geared toward collecting biological data and sparking interest in science careers.

The grant will support the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, the National Park Service and the Schoodic Education and Research Center in the new collaboration.

The project will have citizen researchers using a technique called DNA barcoding to help accurately identify specimens collected in the field. The program, called "Pathways to BioTrails," hopes to extend citizen science projects organized around hiking, cycling and sea-kayaking trails to the nearly 2.5 million visitors to Acadia National Park.

The national grant will help get the pilot project off the ground with four five-day citizen science events — two in 2013 and two in 2014.

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is an independent research laboratory founded in 1898.
