Health care program to aid ME businesses

The federal government is offering Maine businesses a program that is designed to ease their transition to federal health care reform in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services rolled out a $5 billion Early Retiree Reinsurance program to help businesses pay for the costs of providing early retirees with health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, according to the Associated Press. The program is designed to be a temporary stopgap until the state-run health insurance exchanges are implemented in 2014. The funds will provide assistance to employers, unions, state and local governments and nonprofits to cover retirees' health insurance, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meanwhile, Gov. John Baldacci released the 2010-2012 State Health Plan, "Making Us Better: Improving Health and Costs," which calls for reducing health care costs by shoring up public health and prevention, reducing hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and changing the way health care is purchased to reward efficiency and prevention. Past state health plans, which are issued every two years, documented up to $400 million in potential health care savings to create more affordable premiums.
