HealthInfoNet gets $5M boost

The state's electronic medical records exchange has received nearly $5 million in federal stimulus funds to help it expand to the entire state.

HealthInfoNet will receive $4.78 million as part of $267 million awarded nationwide to establish health information technology regional extension centers, according to a press release from Rep. Mike Michaud's office. The money will allow HealthInfoNet to help health care providers develop health IT systems in their practices. In February, HealthInfoNet received $6.5 million to implement a statewide health information technology system.

In related news, Gov. John Baldacci created the Office of the State Coordinator for Health Information Technology, as mandated by the federal award, which will operate under the Governor's Office of Health Policy and Finance. Baldacci also established a Health Information Steering Committee that will advise the coordinator, according to a press release from his office.
