Home sales up 23%

Home sales rose by a double-digit percentage in July compared with the same month one year prior.

A total of 994 single-family homes were sold last month in Maine, a 23.2% increase over July 2010, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Last July, a total of 807 homes were sold. The median sales price also increased by nearly 3%. "Buyers have been cautious in these fragile economic times, but the new statistics show buyers and sellers are indeed coming together," Yarmouth realtor Mike LePage told MPBN.

A report from RE/MAX of New England found that regionally, home sales in July were up 14.5% over the same month last year. However, compared to June, sales dropped off in all New England states except Maine, where sales remained flat while the sales price rose. RE/MAX says July's hot weather likely discouraged house-shopping.
