Jackson Lab to receive $500,000 for development of health care projects

Portland-based Libra Foundation is donating $500,000 to The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor to support efforts to advance projects with potential to improve health care and biomedical science.

The two entities said in a news release Thursday the funding will go to Jackson Lab’s initiative to launch new projects into the next phase of development, speeding the delivery of new disease therapies and new technologies to advance biomedical research.

Jackson Lab President and CEO Edison Liu said in a statement the initiative will help the biomedical research institution move marketable ideas forward in the later stages of research. He said Jackson Lab already has several projects that are at a stage where an investment could launch them into the next stage of development. By focusing on projects ready to make the leap to the clinic or to the market, Liu  said the initiative “leverages the power of philanthropy to achieve sustainability and maximize impact — on the patient, on science and on society.”

Libra Foundation President Craig N. Denekas said the foundation is particularly interested in the ability of The Jackson Laboratory to spur advanced development in the state.

“Efforts by JAX scientists to launch research to the next stage of development and translate ideas to the market represent excellent economic opportunities for our state and beyond,” Denekas said.
