A modular home plant in Waterford has shut down for the season and temporarily laid off 25 workers.
KBS Building Solutions will shutter the facility until April 1, citing a lack of work in Maine and overhead costs, including propane to heat the building, according to the Sun Journal. Another 20 workers will be relocated to the company's Paris headquarters, where 155 employees are working on several commercial housing projects slated for Massachusetts. General Manager Ray Atkisson told the paper there is little commercial modular work in Maine, but KBS is working on several contracts in Massachusetts, including a 238-unit apartment complex in Lunenberg.
KBS bought the former Waterford Homes property in late 2007 and reopened the following year with about 20 employees, but then shut down about six months later. The plant reopened in 2008, but again closed in 2009, laying off 60 workers. KBS reopened again this spring, rehiring about 40 to 50 people.
