Lobster campaign targets sales boost

The Maine Lobster Promotion Council is launching an August marketing campaign in light of the season's "robust harvest," it announced in a press release. The Maine Lobster Lover campaign will include contests and giveaways.

More details about the campaign will be released in the next few weeks, but it will include promotions with retailers, restaurants and members of the hospitality industry in Maine and New England. "Given the abundance of lobsters we have seen already this season, we are predicting another record level lobster harvest this year," said Dane Somers, the council's executive director, in the release. "And because of this remarkable bounty, we want to celebrate one of our state's most popular iconic symbols and encourage people to enjoy more lobster than ever."

The industry has been making daily headlines for its low prices as a result of a high supply and lower demand. Some lobstermen have been tying up their boats, and the Maine Department of Marine Resources has warned them against engaging in illegal activity to prevent other lobstermen from fishing.
