Lobstermen meet on sustainable label

A governor-appointed group will tonight hold the first of a series of public meetings to hear from Maine lobstermen about a plan to pursue certification of Maine's lobster industry as a sustainable fishery.

The Governor's Working Group on Maine Lobster Sustainability, appointed by Gov. Baldacci last February, is pursuing certification from the MSC, a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible fishing practices. More and more large buyers of seafood, particularly in Europe, have pledged to only buy seafood carrying the MSC label, according to a press release from the group. Proponents of the plan say that without this certification Maine's lobster industry could be cut off of major markets.

Following the public meetings, the group will decide whether to pursue certification, which involves a full review of the state's lobster industry that could take nine months to a year to complete. Tonight's meeting is being held at the Ellsworth Public Library. Meetings will be held Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Rockland and Portland.
