Maine lawmakers unite against Citizens United ruling

Both chambers of the Maine Legislature passed resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited campaign spending by special interests and corporations.

The Associated Press reported that Maine on Tuesday became the 13th state to ask for a constitutional amendment to overturn the top court's ruling in its Citizens United decision.

The majority opinion in that decision equated campaign spending with speech and corporations with people, making the argument that limiting corporate spending in campaigns would be an infringement of free speech rights under the First Amendment.
