Maine Mall loses property tax fight

A property tax battle between South Portland and the Maine Mall has been settled in favor of the city.

The state Board of Property Tax Review voted unanimously yesterday in favor of the city's 2006 assessment of the Maine Mall, upholding the city tax review board's 2007 decision, according to the Portland Press Herald. General Growth Properties, the Chicago-based owner of the Maine Mall, argued that the city's $260 million assessment of the more than one-million-square-foot property, for which the company owed $3.5 million in property taxes, was too high. The decision in favor of South Portland will keep the city from having to refund $1.4 million in taxes and interest.

Craig Gorris, a spokesman for General Growth Properties and general manager of the mall, told the paper the company has not decided whether to appeal this recent decision to the state's Superior Court.
