Maine nonprofits blast LePage tax plan
Representatives for hospitals, colleges and other nonprofits in Maine are denouncing Gov. Paul LePage’s proposal to let municipalities tax some nonprofit entities.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Laurie Lachance, president of Thomas College in Waterville, and Jeff Austin, vice president of government affairs and communications of the Maine Hospital Association, were among those voicing concerns about the proposal at a Tuesday state budget hearing. The proposal would allow municipalities to tax nonprofits with assessed property values of over $500,000 — a new revenue stream that would replace some of the revenue from the state’s revenue-sharing program, which LePage wants to eliminate.
Lachance said LePage’s proposal would cost Thomas College $600,000 a year and would put it at a “grave disadvantage” in competing with other colleges. Austin, who also questioned a budget proposal to reduce Medicaid reimbursements, said the tax proposal would cost Maine hospitals as much as $20 million a year.
