MCCS part-time faculty unionize

Part-time employees of the Maine Community College System have voted to form a union with the Maine State Employees Association.

The community college system's adjunct faculty voted 264-96 to form a union with MSEA Local 1989, a part of the Service Employees International Union, according to a press release from the union. Adjunct faculty teach 60% of the classes in the system, and those who voted in favor of unionizing cited low pay, inadequate benefits and few opportunities for career advancement among the reasons. More than 800 adjunct professors will be added as members to MSEU-SEIU Local 1989, which already represents MCCS's supervisory and support staff workers.

In total, the union represents more than 15,000 public and private sector workers in Maine.
