Portland ends talks with pier developer

The Portland City Council has officially ended talks with its chosen developer for the Maine State Pier.

In a meeting last night, councilors voted unanimously to end contract negotiations with The Olympia Cos., after the Portland developer said it would not move forward on due-diligence until the city and state had settled a dispute over who owns the sea floor under the pier, according to the Portland Press Herald. The council's community development committee voted last weekend to terminate negotiations with the developer.

City Councilor Cheryl Leeman told Portland television station WCSH 6 that the city may make another request for proposals, or go directly into negotiations with Ocean Properties of Portsmouth, N.H., the runner-up developer for the $100 million hotel and retail project that has expressed continued interest in the land.
