Portland lawyer to plead guilty to felony theft

The lawyer caught embezzling from his clients and employer, the Portland law firm Verrill Dana, has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of felony theft, according to the Portland Press Herald.

John Duncan, a resident of Falmouth, is accused of stealing more than $300,000 from clients and the law firm beginning in 1997. Verrill Dana first became aware of Duncan's impropriety last June, but the real extent of his theft was not apparent until November, when Duncan was fired from the firm.

The court hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday. Duncan faces up to 10 years in prison for each felony theft charge, but similar theft cases have carried sentences of fewer than three years, the paper said.
