Scallop season nets biggest haul in more than a decade
The scallop fishery brought in nearly $5.2 million in 2013, according to preliminary state data, the highest amount since 1998.
The Associated Press reported the average per-pound price of $12.24 for the year also set an all-time record for the fishery. The latest figures are based on preliminary catch reports for December. The full season for the fishery runs from December through March.
By the calendar year, the AP reported, the total catch of 424,547 pounds of scallop meat was the highest since 2000.
Trisha De Graaf, a spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, told the AP the latest figures are a positive sign for the second season, where the state divided coastal Maine into scallop fishing zones, rotating the areas where fishing is allowed from season to season.
