Scarborough produce supplier shutting doors

A Scarborough-based produce supplier that served 700 restaurants, schools and hotels in southern Maine is closing Saturday. Market Fresh Produce’s owner, Stephen Goodrich, cited the economy in his decision to shutter.

Since 2005, Market Fresh has delivered produce, cheese and some specialty foods to restaurants, markets and other food-service operations, and its sales topped $5 million in 2011, according to the Portland Press Herald. Some of its 20 employees have been offered jobs with competitor Native Maine Produce and Specialty Food in Westbrook, and those who can’t find work will be offered severance packages. Goodrich said changes in the industry, including online ordering, also affected the company. He said the closure will have no effect on another of his companies, credit card services provider PowerPay in Portland.

Goodrich also owns Morrison’s Maine Course, a seller of seafood products in Portland.
