Senate approves petition process changes

The Maine Senate yesterday gave initial approval to a bill that would make changes to the state's citizen's initiative petition process.

Lawmakers in the Senate voted 20-14 along party lines for LD 1730, which Democrats say will help prevent fraud in people's veto processes, according to the Bangor Daily News. The bill would require firms that are paid to collect petition signatures to register with the state, among other changes. But Republicans said the bill would do little to prevent fraud and could discourage people from launching or participating in a ballot initiative process.

The bill now goes to the House.
